Borat: A Movie Review

Posted in Movie Review by silverneurotic on April 17th, 2008

I am almost in shock after watching this movie. It was probably one of the most messed up movies I have ever seen (and I’m putting that mildly, I think at the theater my exact words were, “this is the most fucked up movies I have ever seen!”.
But I didn’t hate it. I laughed…at one point laughed so hard that I couldn’t breath and my abdomine began to ache. I laughed so hard that when I got home I had a massive headache that only went away when I took a few Aleaves.

I also understood that this movie could be viewed as very offensive, and unless you have a very good sense of humor, and very open minded you will hate this movie, and probably end up leaving the movie in a huff.

But one thing I will give this movie…it makes fun of everyone equally. Not one “stereo type” is left alone, from stuffy high society, political figures, homosexuals, red necks, the hip hop crowd, etc…they are poked fun of.

I loved that this was shot like a documentary, and that it honestly felt like a documentary. It had a low budget feel and I would not be surprised at all to find out that Cohen made this film without telling anyone that he was making the film. It really felt like the people in the film had no idea that this was a movie and not just some strange cultural project that some guy was doing.

At times it went to the extreme, and I think that some of the more…um, clothing impaired scenes will haunt my dreams for a long time. And there were a tad too many gross out, uncomfortable moments that make you want to cover your eyes for awhile.

It was an experience. I will give it that. Perhaps not an experience I would partake in more than once. But an experience nonetheless.

If you are considering seeing it, all I can say is proceed with caution and leave any hang ups at home. This is definitly not a movie for the easily offended.
